DIY

Have you ever read over your owner’s manual? You should review this manual and discover ways to utilize it to ensure that important details are really easy to find. Your manual has all that you need to know about looking after your vehicle and performing small repairs yourself.

Educate yourself on your car’s manual and bookmark important pages. This will help you speak intelligently to a technician about your car when it is time to take it in. What you think maybe an issue, may not be at all according to the manual.

Before you actually take your car to a mechanic, try to assess what the problem is first. This will help you to save loads of money on an auto repair. As you have probably heard, there are mechanics out there that will be dishonest so they can charge you more money.

If you don’t have basic knowledge about the car, you can’t recognize if something is going wrong. You may want to enroll in a class about auto repair. You may be reluctant to pay for such as class, but you’ll be glad you did when you save money on auto repairs. It will be easier for you to catch problems before they get out of hand. Doing your own auto repairs is really not as hard as you might think and can save you a ton of money.

It is a good idea to keep a small set of tools in the back of your car for minor repairs on the road. The tools you need include tire changing equipment, which usually comes with a car. A good lug wrench and jack are key. Then have a screwdriver kit, socket wrench kit, a ratchet set, torque wrench, and adjustable wrench, too. Never buy really cheap tools. It is always a bad idea to authorize repair work on your car without a written estimate. You can’t complain later if you didn’t get the estimate in writing.

Think about using a mechanic who fixes cars in his own garage. If they’re experienced then they probably can do quality work and they don’t charge a lot either. This can help you save money but make sure that they have a good reputation.

The labor rate should be posted in your repair shop. If it is not, ask. Also ask the price of a repair, including parts. There are many unscrupulous mechanics who are not upfront about their costs and policies. Since it’s your car, you have to know the cost of repairs. Some stores are able to give you an estimate of how long they’ll keep your car. Some repairs that are deemed “minor” may be all day jobs according to the manufacturer.

While going to a dealer costs more, on average they are going to do a better job. Mechanics who work at a dealership often know a certain model really well. They have rapid diagnostic tools and are used to handling common problems with your specific vehicle. They also stay up to date with training.

When a problem is big, don’t self-diagnose it. Keep in mind that you aren’t an expert. It may seem like an easy fix, but in modern computerized vehicles, that may not be the case. OEM

Have you heard of the term Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)? Well, OEM is a term used to describe car components that come from the original manufacturer. Remember this when replacing parts on your car.  Ask for OEM parts if you need some new parts for your vehicle. If you let your mechanic know that you only want OEM parts, you’ll appear to be knowledgeable. It is not as likely that a technician will attempt to put used parts upon your automobile.

When you have paid for a new part, ask the mechanic to return the old one to you. If he refuses, it may be because the part was never replaced.
